 When sumo wrestling first became popular in Japan 1500 years ago, it was a ritual used to predict the outcome of crop harvests. 日本の相撲は約1500年前に、農作物の収穫を占う祭りの儀式として始まりました。
鎌倉時代には武士の戦いの訓練として行われていましたが、江戸時代には相撲を職業とする大名お抱えの力士が登場して、興行化。
次第にルール化されて競技としての性格を強め、相撲は歌舞伎とならぶ庶民の楽しい娯楽となりました。
現在でも力士がまげを維持するなど、江戸時代と同じスタイルで行われています。
そして相撲が行われる国技館などの会場では、観客はお酒と食事を楽しみながら、力士の勝負に熱狂しています。
相撲は1953年から現在までほぼ毎場所、NHKでテレビ放送され続けており、日本の「国技」とも呼ばれますが、外国人力士の数も増え、相撲の世界にもグローバル化の波が押し寄せています。©2017 KODANSHA English Language Learning
