About this listen

The man on the moon was dead. They called him Charlie. He had big eyes, abundant body hair, and fairly long nostrils. His skeletal body was found clad in a bright red spacesuit, hidden in a rocky grave. They didn’t know who he was, how he got there, or what had killed him. All they knew was that his corpse was 50 thousand years old - and that meant this man had somehow lived long before he ever could have existed.

Critic reviews

“Pure science fiction…Arthur Clarke, move over!” (Isaac Asimov)
“Hard science fiction with a lovely vengeance but done so well that almost no scientific background is needed to understand and enjoy it…Highly recommended.” ( Analog)
“Intellectual action portrayed as excitingly as any space war - a truly absorbing read and a reminder that learning is one of the greatest human adventures.” ( Publishers Weekly)

I properly enjoyed this book. I usually struggle to listen to a book for more than an hour or so, but this book kept me intrigued from start to finish. Looking forward to listening to the rest.

Enjoyable pulp. Dreary reading and definitely dont look up the author :| 4 stars for enjoyment.

I mostly liked it. Some things seemed glossed over though, and others seemed too neat. There wasn't much in the way of character development or emotional or mental processes etc... It was mostly plot focussed and of details of their (mostly) empirical detective work.
That's okay though - books have different strengths and devices and don't need to encompass everything.
I liked the book - It put across an idea that I personally had never thought of or come across before. I might get the next book in the series.

Just a warning though on the chauvinism - I had to remind myself to just breathe through it - that it's from the 70's and it's another perfect example of a Sci Fi novel of its time.

Bit chauvinistic but it is from 70's

Thoroughly enjoyed this story, from the beginning it captures the listener. The detailed arguments about Charlie were great, they led the listener on to potential explanations that were grounded in science, there were no leaps of faith and at the end which completed the story I had to go straight on to the following book because I wanted to know more. Excellent story, brilliantly performed.

Good hard science fiction

Any additional comments?

A very good story from start to end, well read in my opinion. I shall buy more of James Hogans books.

Thought it was going to be hard going... Kept with it and was enthralled. Will be reading the next in series next.

I loved this. Reminded me of science films on tv and those ones shown in the class room.

Escape into 1970’s

Interesting mashup of twists on homosapiens' evolutionary past and astronomical future. If you're into evolutionary anthropology and fairly (but not crazy) hard sci-fi, you should like it. Usual issues with the datedness of female characters etc but I actually preferred it to Arthur C. Clarke, even though the end premise might rely on a pretty tenuous Deus ex machina.

Astronomical archeology á la AC Clarke
