After just a year of close, loving marriage, Ruth has been widowed. Her beloved husband, Ben, has been killed in a tragic accident, and Ruth is left suddenly and totally bereft.

Unable to share her sorrow and grief with Ben's family, who are dealing with their pain in their own way, Ruth becomes increasingly isolated, burying herself in her cottage in the countryside as the seasons change around her. One of my favourite books but the narration is wrong and jars, especially at the start. Susan Hill set this book in a place she knew well in the south of England following the death of the man she was to marry. Why the narrator assumes it is in Yorkshire is beyond me and it spoilt the book. Ruth is an intelligent and reflective main character. The narrator misses this. What a pity Susan Hill herself couldn’t have been persuaded to narrate.
