I recently read Herta Muller’s novel ‘The Passport’ which deals with a similar theme of post-war chaos, although that novel centres on a German speaking village that after the war has become part of Romania. This book is no less stark and the descriptions of the treatment and conditions of the protagonists is heartbreaking at times. However there is also a sense of hope and humanity throughout the book which is also beautifully written.
