About this listen

Yeonmi Park was not dreaming of freedom when she escaped from North Korea. She didn't even know what it meant to be free. All she knew was that she was running for her life, that if she and her family stayed behind they would die - from starvation or disease or even execution.

This book is the story of Park's struggle to survive in the darkest, most repressive country on Earth; her harrowing escape to South Korea through China's underworld of smugglers and human traffickers; and her emergence as a leading human rights activist - all before her 21st birthday.

Such a Moving story

This was one of the most moving stories I've heard in a lot time.. Forget about you 1st world problems that Twitter users love to complain about.. This is a real life struggle for survival. The narrator was great and really did feel like it was Yeonmi telling the story herself. I would get home with it playing in the car and just sit there listening in the drive.

Fascinating, heartbreaking but also triumphant.

An incredible insight into life in North Korea. Terribly sad at times but also courageous and inspiring. The author tells the story of her journey so well. I felt I was there with her at times. Glad the is the reader. What an achievement in itself. No issues in understanding her English. I wish her and the family all the very best.

Speed it up

The story itself is amazing, the reader not so much. However, I set the speed to x1.20 and the quality of the speaker increased 10-fold. Give it a try, it's worth it.

Poignant and courageous storey

I loved this simply narrated biography of a young woman who had packed more than a full lifetimes experiences into just 21 years. She is an inspiration to those who wish for a future free of oppression. By highlighting her battles she has energised the campaign to oppose all forms of suppression of human rights.

I was very moved by this storey and would recommend this book to everyone.
