'Offers a strategy for intervention that would save lives' INDEPENDENT

Every four days in the UK, a woman is killed by her partner or ex-partner – and in the past year, domestic abuse has become an epidemic.

For thirty years, Jane Monckton Smith has been fighting to change this. A former police officer and internationally renowned professor of public protection, she has developed her ground-breaking research into an eight-stage homicide timeline, laying out identifiable stages in which coercive relationships can escalate to violence and murder.

Drawing on disciplines including psychology, sociology and law, Monckton Smith talks to victims, their families and killers to piece together the hows and whys of abuse – while shining a searching light onto the society and media that allow it to thrive.

This non-fiction works exceptionally well for audio. It moves through the eight-stage model of coersive control in a way that is easy to follow and understand. There are lots examples from the author's extensive work and network, so it is in no way dry or overly theoretical. After listening I am filled with anger and empathy, but also with insight and clarity.

Important, clear...and sad

Everyone should read this book. It should be taught in schools before the partner search starts. It’s a game changer and potential life saver.

Jane Monckton-Smith shines a bright light not only on the patterns of coercive control and predictable stages of partner homicide and femicide, but also on how society, culture, systems, institutions and language perpetuate these. Bravely and accurately she challenges myths and questioned the status quo of love and relationships.

By describing her research and her techniques of observing, listening, noticing and analysing in her interviews with convicted murderers who killers their partners, she also provides a model for how to protect oneself and spot the signs of coercive control at the eight stages of her timeline model.

I cannot recommend strongly enough!

Must read! Don’t delay!

I am a professional who's area of work is investigating and supporting victims of the worst Domestic Abuse....this epic book should be a part of our mandatory training. I intend to read/listen to all of Dr Monkton Smiths books 📚 and look forward to hearing more about suicides in the DA world as they are prevalent. ( Emily Drouet for example) Incredible and chilling at times....a fantastic body of work thanks to the author and narrator who bought it to life.......from a grateful reader. 😊

An absolute must read for every woman & man alike

The content of this audiobook is brilliant. Explanations of coercive control are clear and the examples given are so helpful in providing insight into what coercive control looks like. I wish every girl or woman had the chance to access this knowledge. The delivery by the reader/speaker was also extremely good. I can’t recommend this book enough.

I really enjoyed this book being read to me as it’s full of information with hard to hear facts. I work in the domestic violence world and could identify most of what Jane was saying but it’s still shocking to hear. Everyone should listen to this book….
