When the Taljzi’s genocidal invasion brought promises of aid from the oldest and greatest of the Core Powers, humanity and the Imperium looked to the Mesharom for salvation. But that salvation turns to ash as the Mesharom demand the surrender of the very weapons that saved the Imperium.

good but a bit too popcorn for me
So Glynn did another good job on a book within the dutches of terra series, as with the others in the series the over all themes or at least consequence of the story are relatively up beat and end in a position of positivity.
In this case two main characters and their perspectives are followed, fleet lord Tanaka and the dutches' step daughter as with the last book.
However, in this case I have to say I feel the book lacked consequence or challenge beyond some incidents with the galaxies premier race. When you get to really large fleets it gets difficult to maintain the consequence of loss with out it becoming a number, jack Campbell for instance gets around this by treating ships and divisions like characters onto themselves. In other series, characters face consequence for there actions or reflection by the use of admiralty boards or protagonist having a confrontation with a minor character due to there poor or moral choices.
I feel like Imperium Defiant lacks some of this, vast numbers of ships are being lost but it lacks consequence for me, or characters I know suffering or facing real loss. One example of this would be the fleet lord, who effectively causes the deaths of hundreds of thousands of her own troops for a moral choice. possibly a justify able one, but one that lacks a major or at least a consequence I care about as a reader.
Back during the dutches of Terra the fleets were smaller and thus so were the cast of characters who were all located one or two ships, making the consequence greater of a poor moral or military choice.
some more real stakes to the characters in terms of those lost, clear emotional effects or the effect or loss to others would be great. I think the Poor Man's War series does a great example of this for instance.
