Un proprietario che non vuole cedere alle lusinghe del profitto e resiste, a oltranza, convinto che l'integrità naturale della terra costituisca il valore assoluto. Ma la dinamica delle trasformazioni sociali ed economiche, insieme al gioco delle rivalità, arriva a piegare la determinazione dell'individuo.
Il protagonista don Mattia Scala, alla fine agisce per vendetta contro gli altri e contro gli eventi avversi, commettendo un atto irreparabile, distruttivo e autodistruttivo, quello di bruciare il proprio terreno pur di non lasciarlo in mani altrui. Un conflitto drammatico, tra un apocalittico mondo degli inferi - la zolfara - e un mondo paradisiaco - segnato dalla sconfitta del protagonista.
