La genesi lunga di questa lirica la rende “anomala” rispetto agli altri Grandi Idilli, poiché è sì strutturata sui canoni di queste composizioni, ma l’idea del passero viene a Leopardi in età giovanile (tra il 1819 ed il 1820), annotata nelle pagine dello Zibaldone. Tuttavia la composizione deve essere posteriore rispetto a quella dei grandi idilli, dato che il canto non compare ancora nell’edizione fiorentina del 1831, bensì in quella napoletana del 1835. Probabilmente la collocazione in testa ai primi idilli può essere spiegata in base alla tematica, che è vicina a quella giovanile (la propria infelicità, contrapposta a quella degli altri giovani), rievocata nel presente ricavandola con la memoria (cf. A Silvia).
