About this listen
What if the key to a happier, more balanced life was already inside your head? As a professor of financial economics and recognised expert in international finance, Neeltje van Horen excelled in a demanding career—but constant self-doubt and stress left her feeling stuck. Seeking a way out, she turned to neuroscience and psychology and discovered how retraining her brain—one small habit at a time—transformed her life.
In Ignite, van Horen shares her journey and her discoveries. Blending relatable stories, cutting-edge research and practical strategies, she reveals how small, intentional changes can deliver meaningful results. Recognising that everyone’s path is unique, she offers a range of techniques, helping you discover what aligns best with your needs and aspirations.
Whether you’re looking to boost mental performance, break free from negative thought patterns or restore balance in your life, Ignite gives you the tools to unlock your brain’s potential—and change your life.
The book is structured in three parts. The first focuses on achieving clarity and control, particularly the art of prioritising. I found this section especially useful, as I’ve often struggled with conflicting thoughts and perspectives when making decisions. Neeltje’s techniques helped me move past the paralysis of overthinking and start making decisions that feel final and bring peace of mind.
The second part explores strategies for cognitive enhancement. While I was already familiar with some of the techniques, I still found this section valuable. Neeltje’s ability to blend personal experience and anecdotes with neuroscience insights, and connect the dots seamlessly is impressive.
The third part delves into limiting beliefs and the idea of freeing yourself from self-imposed ceilings and barriers. This section is glittered with golden nuggets and worth re-reading multiple times.
What I appreciated most about this book is how the author combines data models, scientific research, and relatable stories from various domains that influence how our brains function. This holistic approach empowers readers to take control and deliver meaningful results in their lives.
Neeltje’s ability to bridge disciplines and speak to both the analytical and emotional sides of the reader is what makes this book stand out.
Her writing style is clear, warm, and easy to digest. I found it easy to “travel” with her and step into her shoes, which made the lessons even more impactful.
If you’ve ever struggled with negative thoughts, impostor syndrome, self-doubt, or simply felt stuck in your life or career, this book offers a range of techniques to help you overcome those challenges and restore balance.
The book includes end-of-chapter summaries, making it accessible for readers who want quick takeaways. That said, I wouldn’t recommend skipping through it - one of the key messages is to enjoy the journey rather than rush to tick off milestones (like finishing a book a week!).
In a nutshell, Ignite excels at offering practical tips for self-improvement, enhancing productivity, and boosting overall well-being.
The book is well structured and is filled with lots of tips and strategies to make you better and therefore to help you.
