ويسمي المؤلف الفترة الفترة من سقوط بغداد إلى بداية القرن العشرين في الأدبيات الفكرية والسياسية عصور الانحطاط، وأنه مع بداية القرن العشرين ظهرت حركة النهضة الشعرية بنزعة قوية تقفز فوق حقب الألغاز والأحاجي والزخارف اللفظية الضعيفة، وتعود إلى عصور الشعر المشرقة رافعة راية الجزالة من جديد.
