John Cooper Clarke
About this listen
This is a memoir as wry, funny, moving and vivid as its inimitable subject himself. This audiobook, read by the author, will be a joy for both lifelong fans and for a whole new generation.
John Cooper Clarke is a phenomenon: Poet Laureate of Punk, rock star, fashion icon, TV and radio presenter, social and cultural commentator. At 5 feet 11 inches (32in chest, 27in waist), in trademark dark suit, dark glasses, with dark messed-up hair and a mouth full of gold teeth, he is instantly recognizable. As a writer his voice is equally unmistakable and his own brand of slightly sick humour is never far from the surface.
I Wanna Be Yours covers an extraordinary life, filled with remarkable personalities: from Nico to Chuck Berry, from Bernard Manning to Linton Kwesi Johnson, Elvis Costello to Gregory Corso, Gil Scott Heron, Mark E. Smith and Joe Strummer, and on to more recent fans and collaborators Alex Turner, Plan B and Guy Garvey. Interspersed with stories of his rock and roll and performing career, John also reveals his boggling encyclopaedic take on popular culture over the centuries: from Baudelaire and Edgar Allan Poe to Pop Art, pop music, the movies, fashion, football and showbusiness – and much, much more, plus a few laughs along the way.

What an introduction to Audible!!
My first book on audible and what a great choice to kick off with? JCC's beautiful Salford accent brings humour, hope and tradgedy, I thouroughly enjoyed this book whilst driving to and from work. Only trouble is, nothing else is going to top this. All backwards from here... G. Phillips

Luxury, can't say more.
I'll not go on here. Suffice it to say I found this listen a wholly satisfying, enlightening, hilarious, touching, educating, warning, unwavering and incredibly well read. Who else could narrate, barrate, tolerate, subjugate, illuminate, and facilitate such an insight into a cornucopia of life experience. Thank you for sharing a small distillation of your life that trickled down my ears like, well I imagine some of the stuff you talk about. The voice alone is an infectious ear worm, the recollections Frank and honest. Morgan Freeman move over, JCC could read me the Matrimonial Causes Act and I'd listen.
You may hale fromt rong side ot pennines but my lord, you demonstrate with aplomb that at least two good things come out of Lancashire. The train and the one and only, inimitable JCC.
If you don't enjoy this, then there's probably a word for that, JCC eloquently describes it.
Thank you!

He must have the constitution of an Ox!
I’m from Salford as well though I spent more time in Lower Broughton rather than Higher Broughton when I was growing up and going out to the pub with my mates, when I was a teenager. John is a hero of mine and always will be. The first half of this book is absolutely fantastic. It’s hilarious and as a spoken history of Salford and Manchester in the late 50’s and then the 60’s it’s the best I have ever heard. The second half of the book is a much harder listen as John lays out his addiction and it’s toxicity as a grim matter of fact and the devastating effect it had on his ability to write (but not perform). However, it’s no less a brilliant listen as he we hear about a world most of us will never experience so to hear it from the horses mouth about what happened in the early days of punk for example, is a privilege. It’s great that John ends the book on such a positive and happy note, and having seen him perform in Belfast recently I can attest to his continued brilliance.

No-one else could do this.
A story covering not just The Good Doc , but thick slices of English life from the 60s to today.
In itself, worth hearing.
Also, in part, a story of the relentlessness of heroin.
But mostly a story of a uniquely gifted wordsmith who found his chops as a true entertainer, not just through humour but also piercing, relatable insight .
And why could no-one else do this? That delivery. The knowing, nasal, knife-like precision.
The best audiobook I have ever heard.

Honest John
A rollercoaster ride on the Wurlitzer of JCC’s poetic existence delivered with an erudite and encapsulating personal touch that entertains throughout. Dr Clark has a way with words and the English language which cajoles the ear and tickles the senses. Non stop listen
