Critic reviews

The best thriller I've read in ten years... An astonishing piece of work (Linwood Barclay)
I Am Pilgrim is a 21st century thriller: a high concept plot, but with finely drawn protagonists. The plot twists and turns like a python in a sack. The style is visceral, gritty and cinematic...A satisfying and ambitious book, written with skill and verve (Adam LeBor)
Clever and compulsive - the best thriller in years (Deidre O'Brien)

Complicated, meaty and thoroughly entertaining.

This is an intelligently written story, with drama, and twists and turns galore. It is a long story, well told, and leaves the listener eagerly following each facet of the tale. It has been a long time since I have read a thriller quite so riveting. Well worth getting!

Wow- what a story!

Where do I start?
A brilliant book which tells a great story.
Sometimes it felt like he was going off piste and the accent of the reader were a little bizarre at times. However, all in all - a clear 5!

Fantastic

So late to the game on this one but it was so so good. Perfectly narrated and kept me engaged the whole way through.

Good story, narration not so much

I had read this book on Kindle twice before downloading the Audible version - and it was a very different experience listening to it. Perhaps a little was due to the fact that the 'OMG moments' (of which there are several) were not a surprise. But mostly as the narration by someone who I couldn't take to really exposed the flaws of the 1st-person narrative of Pilgrim. On previous readings, I hadn't really been so aware that a) Pilgrim is really superman in disguise, and b) he is clearly telling a story based on information that he cannot have been party to (what the Saracen was thinking/doing when there were no witnesses to share the information with Pilgrim). And for me it weakened the story overall - would have been better as 3rd-person storytelling.

The other major downside was the narration - on a number of occasions I found myself several chapters down the line without actually having listened, tuning out the narration. It was like he was reading a training manual - I think he was going for factual, but it just came over as flat and emotionless. For such a fantastic thriller, surely an actor who could bring some life to the performance could have been found. And.... someone who would take the trouble to find out how to pronounce things outside the American culture. Given that much of this book is set in Europe/Asia - this was another major flaw. The narration wasn't bad enough to make me stop listening (hence 2*), but seriously..... not great.

It's still a great book, with some very clever plot lines so I've retained the overall rating of 4* but having given the original eBook review 5*, this was an unexpected disappointment to listen to.

Good, not great

Very good story and characters, but it is unnecessarily long and quite slow in places.

Such an amazing story

I have to admit that I abandoned the paperback version of the book about 100 pages in. I couldn’t get into it.
But the audio version had me hooked.
So good.
