About this listen

Jenna Chen has spent her life in the shadow of her flawless cousin. Jessica Chen is so smart she gets the top score on every test. Jessica Chen is so beautiful people stop in the hallway to stare at her. Jessica Chen is so perfect she got into Harvard.

And Jenna Chen will only ever be a disappointment.

So when Jenna makes a desperate wish to become her cousin, the last thing she expects is for it to come true—literally. All of a sudden she gets to live the life she’s always dreamed of . . . but being the model student at cutthroat Havenwood Private Academy isn’t quite what she’d imagined. Worse, people seem to be forgetting that someone named Jenna Chen ever existed. But isn’t it worth trading it all away—her artistic talent, her childhood home, even the hope of golden boy Aaron Cai loving her back—to be Jessica Chen?

I have a confession, this is my first ever audiobook experience. The narration completely helped and alleviated my opinion of the book, her voice sounded like honey, tickling the inner creases of my brain. 9 hours tho, I would’ve read quicker than that, but I really liked how the voices in my head were brought to life.

I really resonated with this book as I too had an academically stellar cousin, my very own Jessica Chen, feeling inferior. This brought back some very painful memories, some anxiety and self loathing. Despite this, I had goosebumps, sat completely silently, hanging onto every single word. I definitely want to come back to this and actually read the words, absolutely sure that I’ll start weeping, due to the emotional connection towards my past self.

This book made me feel so seen and it felt like it was made for me at both 16 years old when I was struggling at school and I had all the pressure of being good enough academically, and also me today at 27 years old when the imposter syndrome is real and nothing feels like enough.

Ann Liang’s writing in this book felt so simple yet so poetic - I highlighted so many beautiful and heart wrenching quotes. I felt so much sympathy for Jenna and her struggles. A beautiful story with lots of food for thought for anyone at any age.
