About this listen

A discarded painting in a junk pile, a skeleton in an attic, and the greatest racehorse in American history

'I loved this book so much' ANN PATCHETT

'Brilliantly varied and with a galloping pace' MAIL ON SUNDAY

'A masterpiece' JANE SMILEY

'Thrilling' NEW YORK TIMES

Kentucky, 1850. An enslaved groom named Jarret and a bay foal forge a bond of understanding that will carry the horse to record-setting victories across the South. When the nation erupts in civil war, an itinerant young artist who has made his name on paintings of the racehorse takes up arms for the Union. On a perilous night, he reunites with the stallion and his groom, very far from the glamour of any racetrack.

Washington, DC, 2019. Jess, a Smithsonian scientist from Australia, and Theo, a Nigerian-American art historian, find themselves unexpectedly connected through their shared interest in the horse - one studying the stallion's bones for clues to his power and endurance, the other uncovering the lost history of the unsung Black horsemen who were critical to his racing success.

Based on the remarkable true story of the record-breaking thoroughbred, Lexington, who became America's greatest stud sire, Horse is an original, gripping, multi-layered reckoning with the legacy of enslavement and racism in America.

I did not think I would enjoy this book as I have no interest in horses however following a group day when the book was highly recommended I decided to give it a go. I wasn’t sure at the start but as the chapters unfolded I was completely engaged throughout. I love the way the book is constructed and I enjoyed the different narrators telling the tale of Lexington . This was well researched and well written.

Amazingly well constructed story

I became really committed to this novel. I liked the storylines, the relevance of the background material and the characters’ strands. Multiple narrators can be an advantage, but runs the risk of weaker ones. There was a degree of predictability but a real effort made to connect the past and present and highlight persisting american racism. To an extent there was a sense of events being contrived and the novel would have succeeded (avoiding spoilers…) without the late cataclysmic event. I did appreciated GB’s revealing ‘Afterword’ where she describes her own journey which was reflected in the plot.

I became committed to this novel….

I read this for my bookclub choice and didn’t know if I’d enjoy it. However it’s been a super book. So well written and although a lot of it is fiction it is very credible. The characters are well developed and there are shocking and touching events in it. The narration was great. Can thoroughly recommend.

Great characters and storyline.

Can’t cope with listening to the female voices and views - totally ridiculous and bias views on horse care and racing both modern and pre-1880s completely ruins what could have been a reasonably interesting story
Can’t finish it sadly

Ignorant view to racing

Zero plot, tried to keep going as I hate giving up on books but there was nothing in this to hold my attention

Indescribably boring
