About this listen
April 1803, and the Peace of Amiens is failing as Horatio Hornblower takes a three-master on a vital reconnaissance mission… On the day of his marriage to Maria, Hornblower is ordered to take the Hotspur and head for Brest – war is coming and Napoleon will not catch His Majesty’s navy with its britches round its ankles. With thoughts of his new life as a husband intruding on his duties, Hornblower must prove himself to be not only the most capable commander in the fleet, but also its most daring if he is to stop the French gaining the upper hand. This is the third of eleven books chronicling the adventures of C. S. Forester’s inimitable nautical hero, Horatio Hornblower.

enthralling
Such is the brilliance of description, of weather, sheeting sails, and characters, it is no wonder Forester is described as the father of historical fiction. Hornblower is the hero who inspires the many newer characters in this genre. Sharpe from cornwell, macro and cato from scarrow, the list goes on. Chronologically this is book 3, one I never read in the 70s and I am waiting with baited breath for my next credit and the months ahead of joyful listening.

A complex personality
Hornblower is a very complex personality who reminds me of my Asperger's Syndrome son. Quite brilliant but socially and emotionally inept.

Brilliant
The more Hornblower novels I read, the more I love them. This novel is very well written; its characters have real psychological depth; from beginning to end it is enthralling. The novel is very dramatic and moving; I loved Mr Doughty. This book contains such interesting information about life at sea. I love all the details about the ship’s stores, the food, all the practical difficulties; it really makes you feel as if you are there, and you learn so much. Christian Rodska is perfect as narrator, as always, all the characters have clearly distinct voices. Sound quality is perfect, clear as a bell.

Thrilling sea going adventure
A beautifully narrated yarn of life under sail in the nineteenth century Royal Navy.

Fantastic story. Easily my favourite so far.
Loved this episode. I listened to it on a long drive to Scotland and it felt like I'd hardly driven 10 miles. It was immersive and I didn't want to stop even for a toilet break as I was getting so into it! Well worth a listen if you are a hornblower fan.
