Glavnaja ideja «Istorii» Karamzina - sud'ba Rossii i ee velichie zakljucheny v razvitii samoderzhavija. Pri sil'noj vlasti Rossija procvetala, pri slaboj - prihodila v upadok. Trud N. M. Karamzina ne byl pervym opisaniem istorii Rossii, no imenno jeto proizvedenie blagodarja vysokim literaturnym dostoinstvam i nauchnoj skrupuljoznosti avtora otkrylo istoriju Rossii dlja shirokoj obrazovannoj publiki i naibol'shim obrazom sposobstvovalo stanovleniju nacional'nogo samosoznanija.
