I'm on my second marriage. The crazy thing is I discovered this book and read it at the END of my first message. It literally had every argument we were going thru at the time! Unfortunately my wife did NOT want to read the book. No matter how much a pleaded. 8 years later I've remarried and we have STARTED OUT with this book and will continue to read it every year! It's better to start off with this even before you have any marital problems then to wait & read /need it later.

I read a lot of books on relationships and marriage in particular but this was eye opening as it looked at ways to prevent affairs.
The examples hit home the need to seriously consider the causes and subsequent advice to prevent marital disaster.

I'd highly recommend this for all married couples and those engaged. You are likely to learn something very useful.

A warts and all look at what drivers and actions build a great marriage/life partnership. The lifestyles depicted in this book don’t reflect the society I live in but the scenarios couples find themselves in are the same today as yesterday. Don’t let ‘political correctness’ put you off this most valuable of resources. Who amongst us does not want to be ‘in love’ with their spouse for the whole of their lives?

I think this book was brilliant! Everyone needs to read this or hear this. If you really care about your spouse you should read this immediately. So you finally understand how to approach the relationship.

This is a great book with much to learn from, but it needs to be read between the lines and with a critical eye. It's very heteronormative and patriarchal, and some passages are just wishful thinking for somebody idealizing the 50s nuclear family myth. Nevertheless, baby and bathwater and all that, there's tons of good stuff here.

I found this book informative in many ways about considering the different needs of each partner. It is however, heteronormative and doesn’t account for same sex relationships. At points it also arguably offers sexist and patriarchal views and values: particularly around how women should dress and present themselves. I also felt uncomfortable with his suggestion that it is okay to physically punish children. Given he is a psychotherapist I would have expected him to have a greater insight into how damaging this can be for a child’s development. Other than these points, I did find it insightful and useful in terms of how to communicate and meet our needs in relationships and would recommend reading it.
