About this listen
Be a hero in the ultimate game.
Are you a top-rated gamer?
Then you might have the skills to play the Game...where players are sponsored by actual demon lords, gods and goddesses, or Lovecraftian nightmares.
Enter Thera, a real kingdom at the crossroads of many other worlds, but with all the augmented-reality interfaces, character progression, and game mechanics that players know and love.
And the stakes of the Game?
Nothing less than Creation - every world in every universe and reality.
So...no pressure.
Thus Hector Savage, gamer extraordinaire, comes to Thera. Nothing can prepare him, though, for the schemes of Abyssal Lords, rampaging barbarian ghosts, and a host of nefarious forces who want him dead - before he can even make fifth level!
©2017 Eric Nylund (P)2017 Eric NylundWhat about the book? To me it seemed more focused on characters interacting than actual game progression, I believe the whole first book goes through less than a week of in-game time, due to that it almost reads as a normal fantasy novel to me, although with some game quirks mixed in. To me, the first half of the book felt like it was all building up for it _to start_, and the latter half of the book was where it actually started, but the buildup for it to be something special was real, just quite lengthy.
All in all I am happy I read it, I won't immediately jump on the second book, especially as it seems no more books have come out since then, but I will definitely pick that up the next time I have spare credits as I do want to hear what happens next, even if it blissfully did not end on a dramatic cliff hanger. Still, the promise for the story to expand is there.
Oh, and Jeff is great, this is seven years ago though and I can tell he's come a far way since this. While the different characters get different distinct voices, in game events were completely just the normal narrator voice a lot of the time, which is a difference to later productions. But, that is just a fact of it being 7 years ago. Jeff is my current favorite narrator in my current favorite genre, he set a crazy bar with DCC, and his name now sells books to me. So far so good.
A bit more Lit than RPG, but enjoyable in the end

Absolutely brilliant

I didn't get the same energy from Jeff Hays, as I did in dungeon crawler Carl, and I actually went back to double check that he was the narrator for this version!
Just felt fairly amateur
