About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

When Jade's partner leaves the barn that they moved into just weeks before, he leaves a dent in the wall and her life unravelled. Numbed from years in the destructive relationship, she faces an uncertain future and complete solitude. Slowly, with the help of Devon's salted cliffs and damp forested footpaths, Jade comes back to life and discovers the power of being alone.

Through conversations with other hermits across the world, Fitton sheds light on an extraordinary and misunderstood way of living which has survived into the 21st century - from monks, to hikikomori, and the often ignored female hermit.

Lyrically written, this is an inspirational story of recovery, of finding home and of celebration of solitude in the natural world.

Critic reviews

A dreamy, beautiful book about the consolations of solitude. In Hermit, Jade wanders a sunlit, windswept, delicately drawn landscape of loss and longing, and in doing so finds the stillness at the centre of herself. Hopeful and open-hearted. (Cal Flyn, author of 'Islands of Abandonment')
A book of spellbinding brilliance by a writer of rare talent. (Tristan Gooley)
Written with often startling beauty, Hermit is an intimate account of the healing power of solitude. Though deeply personal, it explores universal truths about society and the human condition. A brave, brilliant and important book. (Lee Schofield, author of Wild Fell)

Wonderful

I very much enjoyed listening to this book on audible and was only sad when I came to the end. Jades descriptions of nature are sublime and so much so I feel I need to buy a copy of the book to reread them. As someone who lives in Devon I particularly enjoyed it and Lundy is now on my bucket list. Would love to see the references too as a lot of research has gone into the book and I’d like to read some of the authors mentioned but can’t seem to get them from audible so I definitely need a copy of the book too.

Excellent, soulful and captivating

I really enjoyed this read/listen. Intimate, highly interesting and absorbing. I also found it a really soothing listen. Jade reads it beautifully and has a way of making you feel like you’re standing along side her in the landscape as she carries you through her story. It’s a soulful book with a down to earth, clever, expressive and fluid narrative.

Great book - sad but ultimately bright

Great book - sad but ultimately bright, well written and positive. Always a good sign when an author is willing to read their own book.

Hauntingly beautiful

What a beautiful book, one that I will definitely come back to in years to come. The desire to retreat from modern society and live someplace quiet has always been there for me, although I’ve not acted on it (yet!), and it was wonderful to hear what this kind of life can look like in modern day England. Jade writing is so evocative, and she did a wonderful job at allowing even more of her personality to shine through her reading. Highly recommend!

Transportive… off to the wilderness I must go

A true delight to listen to; swept away into a different way of being/existing. Off to the wilderness I now must go!

Deeply beautiful, I feel like this book came at just the right time. Very thought provoking and full of magic

I loved this book. I feel hermit tendencies myself and it was wonderful to listen to a memoir of someone who has a lived experience of this life and ruminated on the magic of it- as well as it often being a self protective act. Has deepened my desire to live in the wild.
