About this listen

A satire at the expense of the establishment, but as Harry Lampeter says, "If you can’t take a joke, you shouldn’t have joined."

Two years after he blew up the Channel Tunnel to foil the Franco-German invasion, Harry Lampeter returns to England, hoping for employment with MI6. The political climate in Europe has changed. The Roman Catholic Church, led by mad Pope Benedict XVII, is attempting to fill the power vacuum in Europe by reviving the Holy Roman Empire, with himself as Emperor. The CIA has other ideas, as do the leaders of the European nations.

Harry discovers that his half-sister, Emma, and her daughter are being held at the Mary Magdalen Hospital for Penitent Women and sets out to release them. Meanwhile, Ms R returns in a new guise, burning with anger and seeking revenge on her former boss, Brigadier Crisp, the head of MI6.

Although not much Harry in this one, still an enjoyable listen.
The narration has a strange quality to it, that I think adds to the appeal of the age of steam.
Not the best story in the series and think it's a tie up of the characters to end the series (oh how I hope I'm wrong), but Roger's humour prevails throughout.

I have read all 4 books in the Harry lampertor series and every single one has been absolutely fantastic. Fun to read. Harry is definitely one of those lovable rogues.
And you cannot help but like him. The book is filled with fantastic characters, good and bad. And their adventures, I just absolutely fun to listen to.
l
As in his previous books, Harry is involved in an adventure, which has great international implications in the bizarre world that he lives in. But what I think I most like about these books is the little funny bits of humour, little jokes, which really reflect what's going on in the world today.
I would absolutely 100%. Recommend this book to anyone who likes steam punk or just an interesting adventure.

Where do we start with this one? Again, another great book from Roger Ley. This man can write a book that keeps you on edge from start to finish.

These are not my usual reads, but I absolutely love them. Write from the get-go. They keep you immersed in a world that, although different, you can imagine living in. One of my favourite parts was when he referred to Henry VIII's departure from the Catholic Church as being akin to Brexit; I laughed out loud. Such a perfect piece of writing.

I love the characters, especially Harry. He has a wonderful sense of humour and a depth of character, a lovable rogue, but intelligent and very resourceful.

The narration was excellent, and the story was highly engaging. At no point did I think I could guess where the story was going, which was great.

I highly recommend this book/audio and have done so to friends. I know I keep saying this about this author, but it's true: Pick up his books and try them.

Craig Bowles is a great narrator. Easy to listen to. I sped up the narration to 1.2 on Audible, which is my normal.

Like the rest of the series of books the story and the narration were amazing. Every chapter the book just got better all the way until the end.

It was so good to escape back into this world again. This series is my only real exposure to the genre and I really love it. The narration works really well and suits the style of the book.

Really enjoyable series and well narrated

This is a pleasant and humorous return to the low tech world of the previous Harry Lampeter books, with a compelling and unexpected story that explores the potential for organised religion to be exploited as a vehicle for personal power, espionage and national politics.

The latter is engagingly contrasted with the more mundane lives and concerns of Lampeter and friends.

The narrator, Craig Bowles, who evidently enjoyed reading the text, has also excelled himself with the provision of a wide range of appropriate voices and accents, which further enhance Roger Ley's talent for the depiction of characters at all levels.

A Superb Addition to the Harry Lampeter Series

I so enjoy listening to the Harry Lampeter stories, and I looked forward to listening to this one when it became available in audio format. It didn't disappoint; it's a great addition to the series. I do enjoy Roger Ley's writing style; it's smooth-flowing and easy to follow. This story is an enjoyable one and takes a humorous look at the politics of both the Catholic and Anglican churches. I'm not religious at all, but did wonder, what would happen if the Catholic Church used information it learned in the confessional for its own gain?

This is the fourth book in this enjoyable steampunk series, but don't worry if you have missed the earlier books, as this book works well and can be enjoyed as a stand-alone. The narration by Craig Bowles is perfect as always.
