About this listen

In the latest installment in Wendell Berry's long story about the citizens of Port William, Kentucky, readers learn of the Coulters' children, of the Feltners and Branches, and how survivors "live right on."

"Ignorant boys killing each other," is just about all Nathan Coulter would tell his wife about the Battle of Okinawa in the spring of 1945. Life carried on for the community of Port William, Kentucky, as some boys returned from the war while the lives of others were mourned. In her 70s, Nathan's wife, Hannah, now has time to tell of the years since the war.

This was my first Wendell Berry book and will not be my last. It was beautiful. Thought- provoking, wise and so easy to listen to. A wonderful story.

A truly beautiful story

An old lady narrates her life looking back from the end of her days as a widow. Beautifully and movingly told. Full of wisdom and insight into what makes us fully human. An ode to past times and warning to modern ‘busy’ folk: discontented from creation and each other.

The wisdom and love that grows during a life well lived: connected to land, family and neighbours

What is there to say? Wendell Berry doesn’t need an jntroduction. It was the first novel I read by him and yet I feel like I have known him my whole life. His writing has brought peace and quiet to my days and reminds me of my grandparents and all the love I received from them and their place in the country.

My favourite book in a long long while
