Attirandosi l'accusa di tradimento, nel maggio 1915 l'Italia dichiara guerra all'Austria. La decisione è una scelta grave e azzardata. Allo scoppio del conflitto, nell'agosto 1914, il nostro Paese era in effetti alleato con le Potenze centrali, ma aveva deciso di mantenersi neutrale.
Erano seguite rivendicazioni nei confronti dell'Austria-Ungheria, colpevole di aver tenuto all'oscuro l'alleata dei propositi di guerra. In un contesto di grande ambiguità il Governo italiano finì allora per stringere un accordo con la Triplice Intesa...
