Den unge nyuddannede jordemoder Hillevi Klarin ankommer i foråret 1916 til den nordsvenske landsby Röbäck ved Svartvattnet, et fattigt og isoleret udsted. Indlæst af Puk Schaufuss, som er uddannet fra Det Kongelige Teaters Elevskole i 1965. Hun har medvirket i forestillinger på de største danske teatre og haft roller i film som De røde heste og 'Kun en pige' samt tv-serien Nikolaj og Julie.
