About this listen

Old Man Hawkins was a larger-than-life character among deer hunters, or, more precisely, among tellers and hearers of tall tales. His self-proclaimed method of hunting deer by holding a mirror in one hand and his rifle in the other, pointing backward over a shoulder, was, he said, "to be fair to the deer". It was a story, Davis tells us, that would occupy his father on the drive to Grandma's house.©2002 Donald Davis (P)2002 August House Publishers, Inc. Biographical Fiction Literature & Fiction

Editor reviews

Donald Davis is a storyteller extraordinaire. He keeps tall tales fun and interesting with his versatile delivery, music, and vocal sound effects. For instance, his crying is just how it would probably sound to young listeners - boohoohoohoo. His voice and delivery realistically capture the time and feeling of the zany stories. Regarding grandma and her naughty grandkids, Davis says "Stories would sneak up on us when she needed to teach us something." Great fun and an excellent vocal window on different places and times.
