About this listen

God Is Disappointed in You is for people who would like to read the Bible...if it would just cut to the chase. Stripped of its arcane language and interminable passages, every book of the Bible is condensed down to its core message, in no more than a few pages each.

Written by Mark Russell with cartoons by New Yorker cartoonist Shannon Wheeler, God Is Disappointed in You is a frequently hilarious, often shocking, but always accurate retelling of the Bible, including the parts selectively left out by Sunday School teachers and church sermons.

Irreverent yet faithful, this book is a must-listen for anyone who wants to see past the fog of religious agendas and cultural debates to discover what the Bible really says.

Thoroughly enjoyed it. without a doubt, a classic in the making. I got more from this book than I did from 15 years of Sunday school

eye opening and brilliant

I wondered, as a student of theology - I've been one for well over forty years - what I was going to find as I listened to this book. I was taken back to college days and remembered my Old Testament lecturer, who some thought irreverent for his sometime humorous, sometime irreverent whistle-stop recounting of the biblical narrative . However, I found his somewhat unusual yet panoramic overview quite enthralling and he fanned a flame of interest that has never been extinguished. This listen similarily paints with broad brushes and gives a marvellous overview. Listen, enjoy and then maybe ask, if this narrative isn't 'history remembered' but a faith story, what is it's deeper meaning, what is its 'more than historical' meaning? O, and by the way, don't forget to laugh!

Of the Old and New Testaments.

Thoroughly enjoyed the book. If you are religious don't consider if you lack a sense of humour!

Ultra Concise and extremely amusing version

With all the troubles in the Middle East and the problems in the world for Jews right now this book made a lot of sense of it. It didn’t make me believe more or less or question my Christian faith, but it made me understand the Bible a great deal more. Thank you Mark for what must’ve been a huge amount of work.

Very poignant right now

I loved this audiobook!

I had recently downloaded the actual bible in audiobook form so I could learn more than the odd passages taught at school and over dinner by my born-again Christian mother-in-law. Several hours into that, I came across God Is Disappointed In You as a recommendation in my Audible subscription and I couldn't resist the temptation to consume the stories in a more condensed format. I'm so glad I did! I felt the author was true to the bible (what I'd managed to get through) without the guff. I didn't feel at all like he was mocking the source material, but it was still really, really funny.

Unsurprisingly, it did nothing to stop me being atheist, or to help me understand why people believe in God, but I still highly recommend it.

Divine

Where does God Is Disappointed in You rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This is in my top five all time favourites and I have listened to a lot of audio books.

What did you like best about this story?

Well, the story is basically a distillation of some of the greatest stories ever told, since it is a humorous break down of the entire Bible Old and New Testaments. But as the author says there are many stories most people will not be aware of since they are not usually told due to the violent or sexual nature of the content.

Which character – as performed by James Urbaniak – was your favourite?

James reads the whole thing and plays all the characters - often with such hilarity and perfect characterisation and timing that I almost choked laughing. He reminds me of David Sedaris in his tone and delivery and he interprets the author skilfully.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Indeed I did - some may be put off thinking this to be a religious book, which it is not. The hilarious thing about the writing is that it proves that the Bible itself is not really a 'religious' book - more of a comedy of errors and human foibles. I have been a Vicar in a previous life and have a degree in Theology so I am very familiar with the Bible. This book should be compulsory reading for all seminarians and congregational members of church or synagog.

Any additional comments?

You don't have to know anything at all about the Bible to appreciate and indeed enjoy this book - it is truly hilarious and James Urbaniak is amazing in his delivery. uiy this audio book BUT do not listen while driving!
