About this listen

The 11th installment in the New York Times best-selling A Twisted Tale series asks: What if Meg had to become a Greek god?

After Hercules proves he's a true hero and regains his godship, all seems right in the world. That is, until Zeus tells Meg that she can't be with Hercules because she's, well, mortal. Luckily, Hera has a solution, offering Meg a chance to prove herself worthy of a spot on Mt. Olympus - as a god. All Meg has to do is complete a mysterious quest.

The mission? Oh, just to rescue her ex's current wife from the Underworld. The ex-boyfriend she saved by selling her soul to Hades. The ex-boyfriend who immediately moved on to someone else while she was stuck in the Underworld. Can Meg put her past behind her and use her quick-wit to defeat monsters and gods alike, including the nefarious Hades? Will she finally figure out her place and contribution to the world? Or will her fear of commitment have her running away from an eternity of godhood with Herc?

Written by the author of Mirror, Mirror and Conceal, Don't Feel, Jen Calonita's latest twist is sure to delight and surprise.

Not sure how to feel about this

It was OK. The voice over was all over the place with accents and weird inflections, and made it seem far more childish than it needed to be.
The writing itself was questionable with odd bits of phrases taken from the movie and used over and over again in stange ways. Hercules just seems to say 'Meg!' 50% of the time and has no real personality. Still nice to see she has a back story of some sort

15 year old me would have loved it!

Firstly, the positives. Hercules is by far my favourite Disney movie, and I just adore Megara. The narrator was interesting with a very distinctive voice, it took some time to get used to, but actually ended up being very soothing to listen to. This read/listen is good for before bed or if you can't get to sleep. It is very much a typical Y/A book where Meg just happens to be good at everything and is always shocking everyone with how amazing and yet downplayed her character is supposed to be like. I feel like 15 year old me would have given this 5 stars easily! and probably a 2nd listen! I almost didn't want Meg to end up with Hercules in the end! I was amused by Ageus who acted naturally like he was in a Greek tragedy and it did make me giggle. She should have ended up with him! The ending was nice, fine.

However, now for the negatives. This book, especially at the beginning repeated lines from the movie a few too many times. I was begging not to hear the line I knew was coming, and then it came, and I cringed! very repetitive, the author found a word or phrase she liked and then overused them. The story itself started quite slow and it wasn't until about 3/4 in that I actually cared about what was happening. The narrator was so soothing and took her time reading which usually I appreciate, but this time, I turned the speed faster so it wouldn't take so long to get through.

I'm a Classicist, so I feel like this story would excite me (like the movie, which to be fair isnt accurate either lol) putting my love of ancient Greece and my favourite Disney film together. Did not love it, incredibly underwhelming and I wanted to like the added touch of the myth of Demeter and Persephone, but it seems like the author did the minimum Google search and went with it, when all she needed to do was read the Homeric Hymn to Demeter and she would have got a much better sub-plot than what she ended up with!
However this isn't supposed to be factually correct, it's a twist on a Disney film. And, if you can look past the inaccuracies I believe it would be a decent read/listen. I know, I know, it's fiction. But still, for me personally, the inaccuracies did take away from the enjoyment of it.

Great listen!

Brilliant story. I especially loved hearing more of Hades (sorry if I spelt that wrong) Meg's behind story was very interesting and showed her in a different light. I'll admit the way Hercules would speak (not the narrators voice but in the story) made him less interesting. Though the other gods were pretty good. Listened more that once and will listen again without a doubt. Narrator also done such a great job!
