The Sunday Times best seller

This is Britain as you've never heard it.

This is Britain as it has never been told.

From Newcastle to Cornwall, from the birth of the 20th century to the teens of the 21st, Girl, Woman, Other follows a cast of 12 characters on their personal journeys through this country and the last hundred years. They're each looking for something - a shared past, an unexpected future, a place to call home, somewhere to fit in, a lover, a missed mother, a lost father, even just a touch of hope....

Critic reviews

"The actress Anna-Maria Nabirye projects the characters superbly: she has a full, low timbre and a powerful directness." (The Times)

"Masterful...A choral love song to black womanhood in modern Great Britain." (Elle)

"Ambitious, flowing and all-encompassing, an offbeat narrative that'll leave your mind in an invigorated whirl...[It] unites poetry, social history, women's voices and beyond." (Stylist)

I loved listening to this book so much!

I loved the idea of this book, it meanders in and out of a group of people's lives, sharing the intimate dramas of each person and weaving them together.
Very strong themes of feminism, sexuality and being black in a majority white society feel a bit heavy handed at times and I often felt the author's voice more than I wanted but perhaps that is what she wanted.

Enjoyable and interesting

Love the way the book starts off with disparate characters who flow together towards the end where the whole book is tied in a pretty bow.

Where it falls down is that nobody was in the studio while the book was being recorded! So many words were mispronounced as though The reader hadn’t practised the book first and nobody had stopped her when things weren’t said right. Really ruined the flow but like I said a great book anyway

Great book shocking pronunciation

This was so beautifully written and flowed effortlessly. Like a patchwork quilt, it all came together in a miriad of colourful life patches, all stitched to each other with the fine tendrils of time. I'll be listening to it again one day and recommending to everyone I know! Also, brilliantly and beautifully read by Anna-Maria Nabirye!

Utterly brilliant! I loved it!

Once you understand how/where the characters fit, it really cements the novel's essence. Great read.
