Mary hoping to leave the hardships and loneliness of her past behind embarks on a new life running a bar in a remote Australian town. The occupants are all driven by fear, striving to survive both mentally and physically in the harsh environment. She dreams of returning to England but that would require a small fortune.
After a period of success, the news of a gold strike leaves the town and farms deserted except for old women and teetotallers. Mary’s business is in danger of collapse and what’s worse her son William has disappeared also overcome with gold fever.
In London Johnny is reeling from George’s revelation. Knowledge of the devastating family secret and the lingering grief of his mother’s death throws him into turmoil. Seeking truth and meaning to his life he initiates a cooperative in the East End of London to provide employment to the destitute immigrants.
Inadvertently treading on the toes of London’s elite he soon becomes embroiled in the crime and depravity of Victorian society. Who will survive the ghosts, secrets, lies and devious dealings in the new industrial world?

Sequels can be hard to do. Characters are established, a tone and a story is set already and I’ve heard many books that do sequels with no clear aim or goal.
I’m so happy that this isn’t that! The first book really made a big impression on me and this as a sequel is very fitting and every bit enjoyable. There is a different tone than with the first book.
This one doesn’t seem as mystical and dark as the first book but that evolution has come with a new setting and a theme of hope. The characters are true to what was established in the first book; only this time we dive on to a more personal level with them. This one really does feel like a more intimate look at the cast of main characters. I particularly enjoy Mary’s journey and her being a strong and relatable female lead.
I don’t want to go too much into the story but this hit every mark I’d want from a sequel - continuity, elaboration, development… it makes sense. I thoroughly enjoyed this. If you’ve listened to the first, you’ll want to give this a listen!
Part of my love of these books isn’t just the authors writing and development throughout, it’s the narration. George is a wonderful narrator who really sets performs the book rather than just read. He has such passion and enthusiasm in his voice that it captivated me throughout. Each character gets their own personality through his range and combined with his accent and way with words, he makes it a very easy listen.
There’s a reason George has become one of my favourite narrators.
I hope to hear more from both George Ellington and E. M. G. Wixley (hint hint.) I really do enjoy their work together, I feel like they’re a good fit for tone of the story and narration, and I couldn’t imagine it any better. I got into audiobooks earlier this year and listening to these two produce a work together is a real highlight for my journey into this world.

The story continued on from the first book well, but became a bit muddled part way through. The ending was satisfactory but seemed a bit rushed.
