About this listen

In a future where privacy is gone, an internet innocent gets auctioned off to the highest bidder.

Eighteen-year-old Blanca has lived a sheltered life. Her entire childhood has been spent at Tabula Rasa School where she's been protected from the internet. Blanca has never been online and doesn't even know how to text. Her lack of a virtual footprint has made her extremely valuable, and upon graduation, Blanca - and those like her - are sold to the highest bidders.

Blanca is purchased by Cal McNeal, who uses her to achieve personal gain. But the McNeals are soon horrified by just how obedient and non-defiant Blanca is. All those mind-numbing years locked away from society have made her mind almost impenetrable. By the time Blanca is ready to think for herself, she is trapped. Her only chance of escape is to go online.

I really liked the story with an alternative view of modern slavery with people who are proud to be slaves and couldn't think of anything worse than being set free. But I also absolutely LOVED the narrator.

Yes ..... . Of course ..... .

It was ok but didn’t light up my interest or give anything beyond obvious plot.

first time reading/listening to a book by Jennifer Bardsley. The story is well written, and I really enjoyed this book. It's definitely worth a listen.

This book wasn’t what I expected, and I’m glad for it! I read/listen to a lot of books in this genre so coming across a story that takes me by surprise is utterly delightful :-)

If you’re anything like me (autistic, with a history of childhood trauma and an interest in understanding the human psyche; especially how our early life experiences & circumstances affect us, and how we can break free of these mental prisons as adults) then I think you’re going to really enjoy this book!

Wonderful narration, interesting (and surprisingly relatable) story

This was a surprise and well worth a listen from the plus catalogue. The writing and narration were both good and I found the story quite disturbingly realistic. I liked that it wasn’t too graphic about violence or abuse although both were implied.

Good story

Overall I enjoyed this book - the narration was a bit tiresome at times (especially when the “I’m a survivor” mantra rolled around for the hundredth time) - but it was an easy storyline and I liked the characters. It was gripping enough that I wanted to read the next book in the series, which I also enjoyed. I would recommend for anyone who likes a dystopian theme.

An enjoyable download from the Plus catalogue

I really enjoyed this book! The only let down was one plot point was left unanswered but hoping this will be resolved in the second book which I will be starting now 😁

How does this not have any ratings?!

Something went wrong. Please try again in a few minutes.

I’ve read quite a few dystopian or dark future type novels, and this seems to reference a lot of them, with a dash of Manga touches, but ultimately misses the mark. Things keep being explained which seem crucial to the plot but are dropped in a bit casually, and I don’t quite get the central conceit. There seems very little substance behind the secret society at the centre and I don’t get why people pay for the Vestas or quite what they do, despite it being explained relentlessly. The world doesn’t feel fully realised and the big twist really isn’t. It all feels like they had a vision of the tattooed guy in black and the girl next door in white and worked from that.

Bit of a mess!
