König Richard Löwenherz ist zwar ein heldenhafter Heerführer, aber auch ein Mann ohne Skrupel. Der Verteidiger von Jerusalem, Balian von Ibelin, erweist sich zugleich als ein Deserteur. Und ausgerechnet der vermeintliche Erzschurke Rainald von Chatillon rettet 1177 das Überleben des Königreiches Jerusalem um ein weiteres Jahrzehnt.
