Die frühen Erzählungen von Heinrich Böll wären andere gewesen, wenn er nicht mit Anfang zwanzig, zu Beginn seines Germanistikstudiums, zur Wehrmacht eingezogen worden wäre. Statt zu studieren, war er plötzlich Soldat. Nach dem Krieg war es für Böll eine Frage der Moral, Krieg und Nachkriegszeit so zu beschreiben, wie sie wirklich waren. Gerade in der kurzen Form fand Böll die Möglichkeit sich auszudrücken. Seine eindringliche Sprache und seine beißende Gesellschaftskritik machten ihn schnell bekannt. Matthias Ponnier liest 45 Erzählungen aus dem Frühwerk des späteren Literaturnobelpreisträgers.
