About this listen

In Tom Wolfe's hands, the strange saga of American architecture in the 20th century makes for both high comedy and intellectual excitement. This is his sequel to The Painted Word, the book that caused such a furor in the art world five years before. Once again Wolfe shows how social and intellectual fashions have determined aesthetic form in our time and how willingly the creators have abandoned personal vision and originality in order to work a la mode.Listen to a conversation with Tom Wolfe.©1981 by Tom Wolfe (P)1998 by Blackstone Audiobooks Architecture Classics Genre Fiction Literary Fiction

Wolfe is a brilliant observer, ingenious wordsmith and unfailing critic of all things thought to be a la mode but which are actually really very flimsy and boring. It’s all upbeat and entertaining. Great words are coined and it is to the point but non preachy. Great fun and an education whilst the reader realising it! Loved it!

I really enjoyed listening to Tom Wolfe’s take down of the American architecture’s avant garde. The narration was okay but it was spoiled by the variable sound quality.

Amusing and fun to listen to.

written in the 80s, this brought on a lot of nostalgia about old books i read in university about Wright, Corbusier and Gropius, some of the greatest, well known, architects in history. written with light sarcasm, it follows the incipits and evolution of modernism, inspired by European schools, and focused mainly on American culture and currents. it's refreshingly critical, and focused on social values. even if a few of the things stated are not completely accurate, to my knowledge, as i've personally learned about them (this is why i deducted 1 star), i enjoyed it a lot.
regarding the performance, this is an audio recording of the original 143 page book, from the year 1998, so it's not the best quality, according to present day standards, it sounds a bit muffled, but it's quite good still.
overall, highly recommended, very relaxing, and worked well with my morning coffee.
