About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

Frank Li is a high school senior living in Southern California. Frank's parents emigrated from Korea, and have pretty much one big rule for Frank - he must only date Korean girls. But he's got strong feelings for a girl in his class, Brit - and she's not Korean. His friend Joy Song is in the same boat and knows her parents will never accept her boyfriend, so they make a pact: they'll pretend to date each other in order to gain their freedom. Frank thinks fake-dating is the perfect plan, but it leaves him wondering if he ever really understood love - or himself - at all.

David Yoon's debut novel is a quirky, authentic, heartbreaking romantic comedy and a refreshingly different take on race, immigrant communities, friendship and family.

I love this book! At first I thought it would be just a fun, slightly cliche contemporary but it quickly turned into a beautiful, meaningful, sappy (sad but happy) story that will forever have a place on the bookshelf that is my heart 🌟

Grateful for this book

I would recommend this book to anyone who likes contemporary stories. I didn’t think it would live up to the hype surrounding it, but it does. Frank ley in love is a Great first book from this author. I found the story really good, especially for a first book, and I found the ending to be so unexpected. Also, I thought Raymond J. Lee gave A great performance as narrator.

It’s actually a great first book

This book made me smile, a lot. It had some lovely observations from the teens on culture, identity, family dynamics between the first- and second-generation immigrants', the hidden power dynamics within communities based on perceived status, or ability to speak the mother tongue, and the explicit conflict between the various global majority communities. Big topics beautifully integrated into a story about a group of teens in the final months of their preparation for their SATs.

So much more than a first love YA rom com
