About this listen
Flashman must choose – politcs in London or slave trading in Africa – not that it matters really in this hilarious third installement of the Flashman Papers
When Flashman was inveigled into a game of pontoon with Disraeli and Lord George Bentinck, he was making an unconscious choice about his own future – would it lie in the House of Commons or the West African slave trade? Was there, for that matter, very much difference?
Once again Flashman’s charm, cowardice, treachery, lechery and fleetness of foot see the lovable rogue triumph by the skin of his chattering teeth.

“The Flashman books bristle with action…and they are very, very funny.”
The Times
“George Macdonald Fraser is going great guns, and, happy thought, he still has some fifty years of the rascal’s misdeeds to regale us with.”
Daily Telegraph

While it is uncomfortable to think of the "hero" as ambivalent towards slavery, this was probably true for many of his contemparies and it's a good thing to be challenged in my views of automatically regarding slavery as morally abhorrent. Having the main character not care either way about it makes you take in the horrors of the subject matter more clearly and I think unfortunately it can be easy to be ignorant to some of the truly abhorrent specifics unless you actively seek it out.
Enjoyable if at points challenging read

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
If you get past Flashman being simply awful, the story is wonderful. The historic detail brings the world to life.Which scene did you most enjoy?
Probably the East Coast of Africa. I'll say no more.Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I laughed out loud a couple of times when in the company of others after Flashman did something terrible (again).Flashman is a rotter
