About this listen

Grace Repton, a beautiful older woman, walks into the police station to tell Detective Matt Ballard she has information that could stop a murder. Her fiance, the infamous serial killer Jeremy Reader, has told her that he has a disciple who is going to kill using Reader's horrific methods.

Reader murdered five women and was finally brought to justice by Detective Ballard. Reader is safely imprisoned in a high security prison, and claiming to be a reformed man who wants to help the police.

But can Matt believe the serial killer or his peculiar wife to be? Can the love of a good woman really change a serial killer?

And the Fenland police also have another investigation on their hands. A Lithuanian migrant worker is found dead on the fens. There is no ID on him, but he has a Tree of Life tattoo. This is the third body to be found with this distinctive tattoo. Is this gang war or something even more sinister?

The police are stretched to the breaking point with multiple copycat murders. And Matt and his girlfriend Liz will fight for everything they care about in a heart-stopping conclusion that will have you on the edge of your seat.

"Back to the beginning again."

Matt Ballard has a message from a serial killer serving time in an high security prison: he believes that a copycat is about to start 'carrying on' from where he'd left off. Not trusting a convicted murderer, he never-the-less has to follow it up when everyone else around him seems to believe he is telling the truth. Once again, Joy Ellis has come up with an intriguing story which she immediately ruins by trying too hard to complicate. And the killer is obvious from the moment they.appear on the scene.
Narration by Matthew Loyd Davies is very good.

Excellent new narrator

Well performed and interesting story lines which and great characters. Most of the accents are completely wrong but don’t detract.

Good story line as usual

Good story line with a twist at the end. Was not as gripping as previous books but none the less it was enjoyable.

Gripping story with strong lead characters

I really enjoyed this book! Excellent main characters and a gripping plot. For me it had a couple of ‘who done it’ points….however, i think the ending was quite easy to guess. That being said it is certainly a must read!

Good performance

I like all the Joy Ellis books, I really enjoyed the performance for the Matt Ballard character,, the voices were much more realistic and what I'd imagined compared to the Nikki Galena books. I look forward to thenext one.

sack the narrator!

I have come into the Matt Ballard series quite late having previously stuck with the Galena and Jackman books. The story was initially very good. however I has worked out who the perpetrator was quite early on.
My biggest criticism is the narrator. His Welsh and (I assume) Scottish accents are truely dreadfull .
Being Welsh myself I have never in all my 81 years ever heard such an appalling Welsh accent. one minute it was a bad north , then south , all of which were equally appaling. The Scottish accent wasn't much better. It contributed nothing to the story and would have been better if he hadn't tried .
