About this listen

An Astra Militarum Novel

A young soldier of the Astra Militarum is thrust onto a battlefield where the average life expectancy is just fifteen hours – facing brutal orks, artillery bombardment, and the horrors of no man's land.

Listen to it because

It's a sharp, incisive look at the first hours of war for a new Guardsman, and all the terrors that accompany it…

The story

Arvin Larn is terrified. On the battlefields of the far future, only an insane man wouldn't be. Seventeen years old and still new to the Imperial Guard, he is thrust straight into his first war, and must face horrors that his sheltered upbringing could never prepare him for. The trenches of the 41st millennium are filled with worse things than rats and trenchrot. For one, the world they fight for is being contested by the monstrous alien orks. The greenskins live for battle and fight without fear, so it's no wonder that the average life-span of an Imperial Guardsman on this forsaken world is only fifteen hours.

Just wow.. This book is one of the best ive heard this year. Dark and grim in just the right places. Fun and lighthearted where it needs to be. 10/10

One of the best

It was a good story. Although I think there could of been more to the story and less focus on things that were happening behind the battle lines. The voices do get annoying after a while with little variety.

The description and setting of the scenes are great, and it really does give insight into the orks and guard on how they wage war.

Decent

This year I’ve read many, many Warhammer books but this one hit harder than I expected? Was better than Id hoped and I enjoyed deeply.

If you like trenches, orks and hearing about a noobs first 15hrs on the front line definitely check this out!

Solid guard story for sure.

How did this book make me feel so hard?

Well performed and interesting insight into the life of a guardsman unfortunate enough to be in a regiment without the likes of commissar Cain or Ibram Gaunt to look after the common man

40k's All quiet on the western front

I cannot describe how well this book is written. I've listened to many, many books and this one is up in the top 3. Very well done.

10/10 guardsmen book

The book is well written and the audio is done to a good standard.
This was previously a liked book by myself which I had read, so I decided to revisit it via audio.
I found it to be a bit of a dull book second time around, nothing exciting and not a large amount of action.
It's very detailed and descriptive, giving a good insight into the average life of a guardsman, even if it's 15 hours.
Ultimately I thought it to be a bit of a pointless read as I spent hours listening to dull and uneventful chapters.
With all that said, it is worth listening to at least once, as a world building and environment setting novel for guards.

A decent guards book

Overall a really enjoyable journey following the humble Guardsman, many highs and a lot more lows in the story but it really does paint the grim darkness and bleak reality of being solider against a universe of Xenos, capturing the camaraderie of soldiers fantastically. Voice actor was brilliant! The price of credit is worth it just to hear Tom Allenby alone. Would highly recommend this Title to any Warhammer/Sci-fi Fan.

Excellent Story.

A fantastic book giving you a real feeling for how it is to be a normal guardsman facing off against the worse the universe has to offer! Really well written and performed.

Fantastic book on the toughness of being a guardsman
