About this listen

Enrico Fermi asked the question, "If there are aliens, where are they?"

Six teenagers are taken on a journey to experience answers to Fermi's paradox, then they learned that their future has changed.

Fermi was one of the original designers of the Atomic Bomb during the Second World War. He asked the question, “Where is everybody?” referencing the fact that if the Universe is vast, and it has so many habitable planets, then why we haven’t seen evidence of intelligent life. If they’re out there, we should have seen some indication. Six teenagers from different parts of the world are taken on a journey by an omnipotent being name AllOne. They don’t know why, and they don’t know if it will end. Each experience alien lives, loves, and loss. Slowly they understand the reason for the journey. As the journey ends, AllOne tells them why they were chosen.

I came for the sci-fi, but I stayed for the character growth and emotional resonance. Each of the six teens has a unique voice, and their experiences with alien civilizations made me reflect on what it means to be human. A bit slow in parts, but the ending ties it all together beautifully.

I enjoyed this book about six teenagers from different parts of the world, who were kidnapped by an alien being and sent together to different worlds and times to experience alien life. With each experience their understanding of life, its values and the need to be open to others and the conundrum whether it would be wise to contact an intelligent alien life form, if we became aware of it.

The six youngsters had very different personalities and were from very different social backgrounds and traditions, and while the story didn’t really allow these to be explored in depth it was evident that they all contributed to the group. The alien characters and their worlds were well thought out and the action and drama on each world was interesting and thought provoking.

One critique I have is that going by their thoughts and behaviour, the teens appeared to me to be a good bit younger than 16 years.

Overall this was a very entertaining, as well as thought provoking read.

Ray Jay Perrealt narrated the audio book himself. I find this is often an advantage since the author knows best how he or she wants the story to be told.

I received this book in audio book format free from the author and am leaving this review of my own volition.

Very entertaining, as well as thought provoking.
