About this listen

The novels of Iain M. Banks have forever changed the face of modern science fiction. With breathtaking imagination and extraordinary storytelling, they have secured his reputation as one of the most extraordinary and influential writers in the genre.

Count Sessine is about to die for the very last time . . .

Chief Scientist Gadfium is about to receive the mysterious message she has been awaiting from the Plain of Sliding Stones . . .

Bascule the Teller, in search of an ant, is about to enter the chaos of the crypt . . .

This is the time of the encroachment and everything is about to change. Although the dimming sun still shines on the vast, towering walls of Serehfa Fastness, the end is close at hand. The King knows it, his closest advisers know it, and the crypt knows it too; so an emissary has been sent - an emissary who holds the key to all their futures.

Critic reviews

"Another truly impressive piece of work from the pen of a master storyteller" (Starburst)

"Dazzlingly original" (Daily Mail)

"Banks is a phenomenon: the widly successful, fearlessly creative author of brilliant and disturbing non-genre novels, he's equally at home writing pure science fiction of a peculiarly gnarly energy and elegance" (William Gibson)

I’m not sure I’d fully prepared to pick up an Iain M Banks book. His usual brilliance is evident through out. But I myself found the story, if not the plot hard to hold on to at times. And not as rewarding a listen as some of his other work.

Brilliant, but hard to follow at times.

Once again, Peter Kenny and Ian M Banks are an amazing combination. Easily the best narration of a story, that's has large chunks written phonetically, I've heard.

Award winning narration (should be if it isn't)

so wondered so feerless..
Peter Kenny yet again shows his genius like prowess when reading and characterizing Iain .M .Banks works.
Its mesmerising from start to finish. Portraying a " youngster" as a main protagonist is very tricky
but with the help of Banks" narrative Mr.Kenny gives a complete "tour de force" his portrayals are so exquisite.
Brilliant
worth more than every penny

A wildly inventive story with the Best performance

Any additional comments?

Don't be put off by the reviews about the phonetic speech, doesn't apply to an audible book!
Put me off for a while but no problem when listening.

Another masterpiece by the master

Took a while to get into this story, but it got appreciably better a third of the way through then really enjoyed it.

Tough to get into but worth persevering

Such original and mesmerising ideas, and so visual and humorous. this would make a brilliant film.

Banks and Kenny at their absolute best. A cracker.

Love Iain M Banks and Peter Kenny - what a pair of souls they are. Of all the stories in the world, this my favourite and I give thanks to them and the peoples who got this to my ears 🤣 daft sop I am!

I always felt the phonetic spelling for Bascilles narration spoilt the flow of the book which is both brilliant and Feersumly inventive . I have listened to a few audio books by Iain Banks including other performers and Peter Kenny was simply outstanding. His range across a wide variety of characters was truly impressive. For me this is the best audio book performance to date and really brought the book to life.

Flawless delivery by Peter Kenny.

Banks was one of the most original writers of hard SciFi, who's mind seemed to be brimming with twisted ideas. His writing was always a pleasure to read though he never let you into his stories easily, I always felt he was bringing me in partway through the story and I was always playing catch-up. And, as fun as that often is it can be hard work.

My one quibble with this and its not the first time I've felt this at the end of one of his books is that he fluffs it and leaves it unresolved or tries to wrap it all up without wrapping it all up. it can be very unsatisfying.

The reading though for this is brilliant. The Bascule sections are amazing.

Typically Banksian.

the best of the non-culture books, left it as saw some poor reviews. but this is a wonderfully deep abstract work. An absolute pleasure.
