About this listen

The next witty, must-listen audiobook in the Flavia Albia series.

An unpaid bar bill leads Flavia Albia to her most bitter and complex case yet.

Decades earlier Appius Tranquillus Surus wrote his will: it freed his slaves and bequeathed his businesses to them. He left an orchard to the Prisci, a family he was friendly with, on the condition that his freedmen could still take its harvest.

The convoluted arrangement has led to a feud between the two families, each of which has its own internal strife. Endless claims and counterclaims lead to violence and even death. Lawyers have given up in exasperation as the case limps on. The original will has disappeared, along with a falsified codicil - and might there be another one?

But is there a solution? Two youngsters from each side of the divide, Gaius Venuleius and Cosca Sabatina, have fallen in love, which could unite the feuding families. There is only one problem: were Sabatina's grandmother and father really liberated in the Surus will? If not, the stigma of slavery will stop the marriage and the dispute will rage on forever.

Reconciliation seems impossible, but Albia will try. Her investigation must cut through decades of secrets, arguments, lies and violence to reach a startling truth.

Blissful

A new book from Lindsey Davis is a thing to cherish. Despite a houseful of guests inconveniently getting in the way of an uninterrupted listen, this book still finished too soon (I did have to volunteer to walk the dog twice a day, and we took a very meandering route). The characters are as vivid as ever (although, with such a twisty, interrelated group it did take a while to sort them in my head!). Fantastic narration. I so love Flavia's world that I shall have to go right back to the first Falco novel to keep me happy until - hopefully- we get our next instalment.

So Love all the books

I enjoyed all the Falco books and now enjoy the Flavia Alba series. The funny thing is I am not a fan of the Romans, I must prefer and studied the Greeks at University and still research them but the pull of all the books by Lindsey Davis are just too good and I indirectly learn more about Roman life ( check up on things put in book) so slowly realising they were not quite the copycats I always felt they were.

I love Jane Collingwood's voice, it is so enjoyable to listen to.

Better than a lot of the Flavia series

I fell out of love with the series a few books ago. It has always lacked the zest and pace of the Falco novels (and to be frank the narrator frequently gets the tone of the characters wrong like Falco sounding like a toff rather than a ex street brawler made good) but this was a better book than the last few and I’m pleased to say I enjoyed it.

A Good Read

Without wishing to give the end away, the conclusion of the main case was a really compassionate tear jerker. I loved it

Another glimpse of the Roman way of life

Bewildering array of characters, needs a family tree. Hard to make sense of it all then suddenly it picks up pace and the ending is superb. Brilliant reading again.

Complicated

Well read but a complicated story with so many characters with similar names that I found it hard to follow the narrative at times

the interwoven actions of familiy greed and grief within ancient Roman life.

i liked both the vivid descriptions of customs, law, structure of society, and the food.

Convoluted

I have loved all of the Flavia and Falco stories, but there were a lot of names and relationships to get to grips with and that detracted somewhat from the enjoyment of this particular story.

Maybe the best yet?

Great story, full of turns and twists. Good to find links with earlier books (eg Ode to a Banker in the Falco series) and so many of the characters we know and love (or not)
