About this listen

May, 1982. Britain celebrates the sinking of the Belgrano, Jimmy Savile has the run of the airwaves and Denton Police Division welcomes its first black policeman, DC Waters -- recently relocated from Bethnal Green. While the force is busy dealing with a spate of local burglaries, the body of fifteen-year-old Samantha Evans is discovered in woodland next to the nearby railway track. Then a fifteen-year-old boy is found dead on Denton's golf course, his organs removed. Detective Sergeant Jack Frost is sent to investigate -- a welcome distraction from troubles at home. And when the murdered boy's sister goes missing, Frost and Waters must work together to find her... before it's too late.

Any additional comments?

As a long-time devotee of the R. D. Wingfield books about DI Frost I have enjoyed James Henry's prequels, this being the third in the series and the best so far. Henry has managed to capture the essence of life in the Denton Police Station and the characters of Jack Frost (and Superintendent Mullet !) ring true to those in the original books (being less sanitised than those in the TV series). I believe there is a fourth book in preparation and I look forward to reading it in due course.

Enjoying these early years of Jack Frost it's good to get a background view of the character that match well to the original R D Wingfield character.

Narration by Stephen Thorne is excellent.

None of the sexist comments which were so needless and offensive in the wingfield book I had last month.
I am not a feminist, just a normal person who likes a good story. This one filled the bill.

What a brilliant story.

I loved this book! John Waters was a fascinating addition which really showed how bad attitudes were to race back then. I like to think things are somewhat better now but I fear it's sadly not as good as it should be!!
Anyway, the story was so good, kept me hooked and I didn't see it coming until the end. Must admit Clarke was getting on my nerves a little in places but I really like her character, I'm just sorry they've taken her down the route they have.
Love the narrator of these books, he does multiple characters really well and I usually know what's being said by who. Would highly recommend.

fantastic both story and narrator

What made the experience of listening to Fatal Frost the most enjoyable?

Henry has captured Wingfield's character perfectly, and the reader is consistent across all the unabridged Frost novels.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Frost off course

What about Stephen Thorne’s performance did you like?

He has a pleasant voice, and is good at being consistent on the vocal changes for all the characters. He is so good that I would listen to a book, just because he reads it.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, as with all the Frost novels. If you like the Wingfield Frost books, there is no clang when listening to the Henry ones.

Any additional comments?

This performance is much better than the more expensive David Jason abridged version. Not only is this unabridged, but the Stephen Thorne's reading is much better. He captures the character of the book perfectly, which was different from how it was portrayed by Jason.

Often when a writer dies the character dies with them, Henry James has kept Frost alive, for which I am grateful.
