About this listen

Brand-new historical fiction from the author of the Sunday Times best-selling Six Tudor Queens series. This is the spellbinding untold story of Elizabeth of York, the first Tudor queen.

Mother. Survivor. Queen.

An English princess, born into a war between two families.

Eldest daughter of the royal House of York, Elizabeth dreams of a crown to call her own. But when her beloved father, King Edward, dies suddenly, her destiny is rewritten.

Her family's enemies close in. Two young princes are murdered in the Tower. Then her uncle seizes power—and vows to make Elizabeth his queen.

But another claimant seeks the throne, the upstart son of the rival royal House of Lancaster. Marriage to this Henry Tudor would unite the white rose of York and the red of Lancaster—and change everything.

A great new age awaits. Now Elizabeth must choose her allies—and husband—wisely, and fight for her right to rule.

I adore Alison Weir's books and have had the pleasure of meeting her on a number of occasions. This novel on Elizabeth of York is as wonderful as Alison's many of books set in this period. Highly recommend reading and listening to this.

Elizabeth of York: A Review

Great piece of writing by Alison Weir, who is a serious historian as well as, in my opinion, a talented writer of “fiction”. I really enjoyed this book. No silly bodice ripping just great writing and good historical detail and plausible imaginative character development.

I love how Alison Weir has envisaged an engrossing story around this Queen and how she has used her imagination, writing skills and expert historical knowledge to create a most enjoyable story blended with lots of little historical details. I found this book easy to listen to and enjoyed picking up the little snippets of history along the way. It’s such a pleasure to find historical fiction written by talented serious historians. Alison Weir has talent in keeping the reader’s interest and retaining correct historical detail.

The narrator Nicky Diss reads at a suitable pace. I generally prefer to listen to a male narrator as I find the deeper voice tone more relaxing and easy on the ear. However, I found Nicky Diss tolerably easy on the ear and preferable to many other female narrators.

I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys historical fiction as well as to anyone interested in this period of history.
