About this listen
Eleanor is the new girl in town, and she's never felt more alone. All mismatched clothes, mad red hair and chaotic home life, she couldn't stick out more if she tried. Then she takes the seat on the bus next to Park. Quiet, careful and - in Eleanor's eyes - impossibly cool, Park's worked out that flying under the radar is the best way to get by.
Slowly, steadily, through late-night conversations and an ever-growing stack of mix tapes, Eleanor and Park fall in love. They fall in love the way you do the first time, when you're 16, and you have nothing and everything to lose.
Set over the course of one school year in 1986, Eleanor & Park is funny, sad, shocking and true - an exquisite nostalgia trip for anyone who has never forgotten their first love.

This book was so unexpected! There were a lot of things I loved, but a lot of things I hated! Firstly, if you are looking for a fluffy rom com teen read, this is not it. These characters are really deep, and the book tackled a lot of very serious themes such as bullying, abusive relationships, and racism. A lot of these themes made me angry and are important for literature to cover, but sometimes they did not provoke emotions for the right reasons. For example, the casual rascist attitude of the adult and student society is dropped in repeatedly in their language and behaviours, but I felt like the story was too accepting of this. Like "this is how it was" with little reference to how not ok that is. That's personal opinion but I felt it came off that way in the audiobook
I enjoyed the beginning and enjoyed the end, but found myself getting distracted in the middle. The pace just wasn't there and I know the book is supposed to represent the slow burn of Park and Eleanor intense relationship and I would have probably enjoyed this more in written form. It just didn't grab me enough for an audiobook. Also, as much as I loved how the book brought that first love feeling to life, Eleanor kind of annoyed me a bit too much (again maybe because of the audio) - she didn't come across that nice a person in parts
Overall, I liked this but it didn't blow me away. I think the audio form partly did it for me, as I think I wouldn't have felt such a lull if reading in written form. I would still love to read more from this author in the future!

Wow. What a way to be reminded of how it felt to be young and in love. Such beautiful ways they describe their feelings. Just like Art ;)
