About this listen

The acclaimed BBC Radio 4 space drama arrives in its entirety for the very first time, with a bonus introduction by creator and writer James Follett. The starship Challenger has been on a 115-year-long mission, exploring other galaxies for suitable Earth-like planets to colonise. The present crew of four were born on the ship and have never left it. But when the Challenger attempts to return to the crew's home planet, it discovers that the Earth has vanished!

When they were first broadcast on radio, Earthsearch and Earthsearch II generated a flood of fan letters to Radio Times. Now at last their superb sound is available, digitally remastered for the first time. Also included is an introduction from James Follett, first broadcast as part of BBC7's "Men, Martians, and Machines".

Still brilliant

Listed to this when first broadcast in early 80s when I stumbled across it. Was hooked then and loved hearing it again

Loved it!

Good old 80s BBC dramatisation. The story line is classic. Give it a go, it has a strong thread and ending.

Most enjoyable

I first listen to this when it was on what was then BBC7 and is now radio four extra. Really enjoyed it then, and enjoyed it just now. Thank you James Follet and all the cast. Most enjoyable listen. Would recommend this to any science-fiction buff that enjoys old materials.

Earthsearch

I first listened to this on Radio 4 in the 1980s. I then bought the casettes, then the CDs & now the audiobook. Still a great listen. 👍😄

Dated but a good story

As Sci fi goes the story was interesting and clever, however it shows its age with special effects and what technology the author thought maybe be around in the future. The guardian angels were the best characters, benevolent and amoral at same time. Well worth a listen though the intro and outro by the author does go on bit. A narrator he definitely ain't!

A BBC classic

I remember the original broadcast on BBC but as the way of things I missed a lot of episodes.
I have really enjoyed reliving the series. A dated format but has the advantage of full production values (a full cast of actors) and the wonderful BBC sound effect department.
I will be listening to it again soon.

.

I did enjoy this radio play, but it took a bit if getting used to.
The effects, which were groundbreaking for the time, are not much more than beeps and voice filters, and haven't aged particularly well. It feels very much a product if it's time
That said, it was interesting and exciting. Each episode has a barrier or problem for the crew to overcome, and while some if these felt contrived they served to keep my interest, I was in fact hooked from the first episode.
I don't think some of the language and plot devices were particularly subtle and the set ups were too blatant some of the time, but I enjoyed every episode.
Tidy was both my favourite, and most irritating character.
Some of the science was clearly from the mumbo jumbo school, but it didn't spoil my enjoyment.
4 stars, one star deducted only for the repetitive and cringeworthy use of "my love" throughout.

scientific concepts that were not approach in film or TV at the time.

if only the scripts of science fiction (or any) UK TV of the time was as good, as compelling and with the reach of advanced scientific theory. compare this to lost in space
I wish I was aware of what was on option on the radio at the time. the drama and scientific concepts are far superior to anything from film at the time of production
