About this listen

Dick Dunster and Philip Progmire have been friends since their days at school. They have also been adversaries. Progmire’s thespian longings, nurtured since he was a university actor, are now submerged in his work as an accountant with Megapolis Television. Dunster is also at Megapolis, engaged on an exposé of war criminals, focussing on a blown-up church and the massacre of the whole population of a small town during the Italian campaign.

As Dunster researches his subject, the scene darkens, and Progmire tries to protect the victim of his old school friend’s merciless inquisition. Long after the cessation of hostilities, Dunster and Progmire are at war.

Good story, entertaining and of course brilliantly read by MJ. All one would expect from John Mortimer, a satisfying listen.

Good story

Another book I wouldn't normally have enjoyed but did. Very good narration by Martin Jarvis.
I am not a huge fan of JM but found the story interesting enough to persevere (although there was an inevitability about the ending).
Worth a listen but not high on my list as I found I couldn't empathize with any of the characters

I enjoyed this book engaging characters and Martin Jarvis reading . What a treat . Would recommend.

Martin Jarvis reading makes anyone happy

One of John Mortimer’s very best books. Humorous and insightful, with a profound understanding of human nature, as well as being a thoroughly enjoyable and intriguing story. Beautifully read, as always, by Martin Jarvis. I shall long remember both Dunster the book and Dunster the hero, or anti hero of the saga.

Classic Mortimer

Positives are Martin Jarvis' performance which as always is excellent. and Mortimer writes in a fluent accessible way.
Negatives there are to me massive plot flaws including the end which for obvious reasons I will not reveal. And the characters are incredibly stereotyped and two-dimensional.
This might fit the bill for an easy read on a journey, but look for more and there will be a disappointment.

Predictable and Unlikely

John Mortimer uses such beautiful language and Martin Jarvis is an expert narrator, together they make perfection of this thoughtful novel, which is as relevant today as when it was written.

Surprisingly, a whodunnit

After its slow and mildly comic start I realised something intriguing was on offer.

Worth perseverance

I could listen to Martin Jarvis reading anything. Loved his acting, and a great narrator. I would never have the patience to read this book, but it's great to listen to whatever you're doing. Great plot no surprise about there being a courtroom scene and entertaining right to the last word. Next, A summer's lease, it was televised, but be great to jear Martin again!

Mortimer at his best.

Very well read and a great listen. One of those books you think about long after you have finished it.

Bit slow at start but soon gathered pace with teists and turns brilliantly narrated by Martin Jarvis
