About this listen

Fearful of losing his precarious hold on the Golden Lion Throne, Shaddam IV, emperor of a Million Worlds, has devised a radical scheme to develop an alternative to melange, the addictive spice that binds the Imperium together and that can be found only on the desert world of Dune.

In subterranean labs on the machine planet Ix, cruel Tleilaxu overlords use slaves and prisoners as part of a horrific plan to manufacture a synthetic form of melange known as amal. If amal can supplant the spice from Dune, it will give Shaddam what he seeks: absolute power.

Really enjoyed this

Read the Dune series first, before embarking on the ‘house of’ books. They each fill in background to the characters you’ll meet in the Dune books. I guess any of the House Of books make a good story as stand alone novels, but they really are best, read AFTER the main series.
The stories are good and the narration is as excellent as ever. Well worth the credit paid.

Conclusion to the houses trilogy

Very much feels like a climax of the house trilogy. All the various subplots are brought together and resolved satisfactorily. Without wanting to spoil anything worth a listen.

excellent trilogy

it felt very much like his father wrote this trilogy.

I really enjoyed all the backstory, that sheds light on what brought all the houses to the positions in the original novel

Excellent story and delivery but...

As with all these later post-Frank Herbert stories, they are excellent and well narrated. However, my gripe is with the amount of background noise - both hiss and compression artefacts in the background. They are at times very noticeable and detract slightly from the overall enjoyment of the story.
Other than that, brilliant 👏!!!

A fantastic prelude.

I enjoyed reading these three books when they were released. I've enjoyed them as much in audiobook format. A fantastic story, adding to the rich tapestry of Dune. My thanks to both authors.

Excellent narration by Scott Brick, each character has their own voice, superb!

Narration was adequate

Great story, narration was adequate but could have been better. Well worth a listen though.

Good story, ok narration.

Enjoyable addition to the Dune Series. Only one problem with the performance and that was the accent for Gurney. It was either a bad Irish accent or a really bad Scottish accent. Narrators shouldn't do accents unless they are good at them. Also, Gurney and Duncan are both from Giedi Prime so giving them different accents makes no sense.
