About this listen
Aram Raythe has the power to challenge the gods. He just doesn't know it yet.
Aram thinks he’s nothing but a misfit from a small fishing village in a dark corner of the world. As far as Aram knows, he has nothing, with hardly a possession to his name other than a desire to make friends and be accepted by those around him, which is something he’s never known. But Aram is more.
Much, much more.
Unknown to him, Aram bears within him a gift so old and rare that many people would kill him for it, and there are others who would twist him to use for their own sinister purposes. These magics are so potent that Aram earns a place at an academy for warrior mages training to earn for themselves the greatest place of honor among the armies of men: dragon riders.
Aram will have to fight for respect by becoming not just a dragon rider, but a Champion, the caliber of mage that hasn’t existed in the world for hundreds of years. And the land needs a Champion. Because when a dark god out of ancient myth arises to threaten the world of magic, it is Aram the world will turn to in its hour of need.
©2021 ML Spencer (P)2021 Podium AudioNevertheless I would say it is a good and intruiging story, the biggest problem for me was narration, which is obviously very subjective.
I find it very hard to describe other than weird, but like I said, the story is good and intruiging despite that.

Wow, wow, wow, what a book

It shines in the times of whimsy, where you get to experience a magical world of loose rules, compared to something more rigid like Sanderson. The two main characters feel good.
But then there are the protracted descriptions of violence and brutality. I feel those scenes did very little for the book, and after a while they felt tired to me.
There are other things that bother me. Such as how every time a dragon flies, it banks. Felt a bit like "aight, this might be the author's favourite word", and some pacing and relationship dynamics felt a bit odd.
Still, very much an enjoyable listen and I do recommend it.
Solid Book

As for the narrator, I've enjoyed their performance and funnily enough I've encountered the opposite of what I usually complain about which was the narration speed. Usually I end up needing to speed up the playback speed a small bit to enjoy the auidbook however this time I had to slow it down to be able to keep up with it, found that 0.9-0.95x speed was perfect.
It's a fun listen

Not a bad wee tale

This is not a short book by any means and yet I finished this book faster than any other - I listened at every possible opportunity. I absolutely cannot wait for the next installment.
The narration was also wonderful.
If you're looking for great dragon rider fantasy, in my opinion this is the absolute best there is. If you're looking for more in the same genre I also highly recommend Ascendant (my second favourite dragon rider novel)
I think I found my new favourite?
