About this listen

When a young solicitor, Jonathan Harker, visits the heart of Transylvania - ostensibly to meet reclusive nobleman Count Dracula - he cannot begin to imagine what horrors might lie in store for him there...or the chain of events he will set in motion at Castle Dracula.

Soon, Dracula's bloodlust spreads to England's shores, and Harker's fiancée, Mina Murray, becomes embroiled in his affairs. Her best friend, Lucy Westenra, falls victim to the vampire's thirst, and it is only with the help of an unlikely bunch of allies that the Count might be defeated...but can the undead ever truly perish?

Mark Gatiss stars in this chilling three-hour audio adaptation of Bram Stoker's classic vampire story, dramatised by Jonathan Barnes. This release also includes bonus interviews with Dracula's writer and cast, plus a selection of James Dunlop's soundtrack for the production.

Directed by Scott Handcock.

Critic reviews

"Iain Meadows' sound design and James Dunlop's music fuse well to create the many different environments required of the story, neither allowing the drama to become melodrama - something that seems to have been a lynchpin of Scott Handcock's assured direction of the piece. 10/10." ( Sci-Fi Bulletin)
"Gatiss takes full advantage of the intimacy of the audio format to deliver a reading of the Count that is all the more chilling for its quiet, compelling menace.... This is a rich, impressive and confident production which should, for maximum chills and thrills, be devoured in a single sitting. 9/10." ( Starburst)

The strongest radio adaption of the novel yet!

Incredibly faithful adaption, even preserving the epistolary style of the original novel. The tone and the atmosphere is gratifyingly straight-laced, avoiding the melodrama and camp of other productions (The version with David Suchet springs to mind). Gatiss' restrained, under-played performance as the eponymous villain is perfect; wonderfully sinister without divulging into cliche. The supporting cast is uniformly strong as is the overall sound design. Fans of the novel will rejoice and casual listeners will be enraptured. Highly, highly recommended!

Quite possibly the single best, and most delightfully chilling rendition of such a wonderful classic!

Dracula

This dramatisation of Bram Stokers classic Dracula, is one of the best in my opinion. The tension builds throughout the story, the terror and horror of the most unlikeliest of realities, draws our heroes to a thrilling ending. No wonder so many films and TV drama's have been created upon the Dracula story. The cast deliver a first class performance, and the story is brought to life by efficient dialogue and music score. Brilliant.

Bela Lugosi's Dead!

I've been the biggest fan of Bram Stoker's chilling classic since I was 6 years old. Now at 30 I finally come across a version that is perfect! Every version of Dracula I love but there's always 1 or 2 slight flaws but not with this! Every character is delivered perfectly and Mark Gatiss is my new favourite Dracula! Every person involved in this was absolutely stellar! Please listen to this if you love Bram Stoker's work. The people involved have done him proud here. Listened to this in 1 go as it was that good! 😁🦇

Bloody good!

Despite being a fan of Big Finish I’ve been reluctant to pick this up. I should have my head examined. It’s an excellent adaptation, remarkably faithful to the book, with a great script and cast, and Big Finish’s usual high-quality sound design. Recommended.

Mark Gatiss as Dracula, Big Finish prod. 2016

After listening to three productions of Dracula this week it is surprising how different they are compared with each other. All were enjoyable and each had their faults/ positives; though if you wish to listen to a more faithful telling of Dracula I would suggest the Mark Gatiss version (Big Finish Productions).

Mark Gatiss as Dracula, Big Finish productions 2016 (3hrs 15mins)

Listened to this twice as first time wasn’t entirely convinced by it, but subsequently concluded it has a much better ‘everything’ than the other BBC adaptations - and Mark Gatiss as Dracula is superb.

My only criticism is the sound design (incidental music + soundscape) didn’t always seem to naturally blend with the vocal recordings. Ideally it should invoke the right atmosphere and flow with the rest of the production so barely be of notice. And I do stress this criticism is only occasionally, not with all music/ sound effects.

Dracula 3hrs 15mins
Interviews with the cast 30mins
Soundtrack 15mins
Outtakes 5mins
-------------------------
Overall 4hrs 5mins

The other productions were I listened to were:
Frederick Jaeger as Dracula, BBC Radio 1994 (3hrs 19mins)
David Suchet as Dracula, BBC Radio 2006 (1hr 54mins)

Mark Gatiss, remarkable!

His wonderful voice drives you through this short but amazing performance . I’d found that the way the events are disposed and telling it’s very similar to the film.
