About this listen

While Captain Anjulie Zarate y Salazar faces a crisis of loyalty at home, Malcolm Khalaji faces another crisis in Los Angeles.

And that crisis is named Yoon Eun-Ji.

When mandatory mental health leave turns into a not-particularly-optional dinner invitation from Seong-Jae's parents, Malcolm finds himself thrust into chaos. Multilingual mortification. Sassy sisters. Spicy steak. And intimate moments that are exactly what Malcolm needs to distract himself from the building trauma inside him, threatening to break and crash at any moment.

But Malcolm isn't the only one taking advantage of the distraction to confront difficult issues—and a story within a story unravels as Seong-Jae descends into memories of his time with Sila, searching for anything that could unearth clues about the cat-eyed man, where his path will take him next, his connection to the Golden Ratio Killer, and the dangers that threaten the people Malcolm and Seong-Jae love most.

Echoes of the past. Remembered pains. Emerging patterns. New revelations. And a confession that could change everything.

For better or for worse, by the end of this case . . . Malcolm and Seong-Jae will never be the same.

Contains mature themes.

After their ordeal in the last book - trying to prevent a mass shooting in a cinema while being targets themselves - Malcolm and Seong-Jae are ordered to take some downtime, so this is one of the 'lighter' episodes - although only in the sense that our dynamic duo aren't looking at gruesome remains or at risk of injury.

Seong-Jae takes Malcolm home to meet the parents - an ordeal in itself - but also takes time to finally think through the years he spent high and being manipulated by Sila, combing his recollections for any clues that might present themselves as to his real identity and whereabouts, and relation - if any - to the Golden Ratio killer/White Rabbit.

There's also serious stuff going down back home in Baltimore, which doesn't look good, either.

But the overwhelming love and trust these Mal and Seong-Jae have for each other shines through on practically every page, and the way this author writes about the depth and breadth of their emotions is masterful.

This is, I think, one of the longer entries in this series, and given the frenetic pace of the earlier books, it needed this time to take a breather - not least because it looks like a single day of respite is all Malcolm and Seong-Jae are going to get.

Curt Bonnem's narration is, once again, spot on. His portrayals of Mal and SJ are absolutely perfect, SJ's deep, measured speech is brilliantly contrasted with the gravelly, yet slightly brigher tone of Mal's. The complexity of their emotions and their personalities come through strongly and he finds a wide variety of character voices to portray all the secondary characters. I've already read this series in print, and these already compelling stories are considerably enhanced by his performances.
