Im 18. Jahrhundert führte Sir Wade Jermyn Expeditionen und Forschungen im Kongo aus, in deren Folge er in seinem Buch Betrachtungen über die verschiedenen Teile Afrikas Theorien formulierte, nach denen im Kongo uralte weiße Hybridwesen – halb Mensch, halb Affe – in einer grauen, vergessenen Stadt lebten.
